Background

I’m Claire, an education consultant based in Barcelona, Spain. The daughter of former teachers, I’ve always had a love of the classroom and became a teacher myself over fifteen years ago - first teaching English as a second language, and later training as a Primary class teacher at UCL’s Institute of Education.

After happy years spent working in schools in both London and Barcelona, I sought deeper connections with adult learners as well as young people, and found this in my role as a regional manager at a national education charity. There, as well as working directly with young people aged 7-18, I was able to train graduate education workers in classroom management and education theory, as well as leadership and development. I truly caught the bug for training and facilitating alongside teaching kids.

My next steps took me to work in the corporate sector as Head of Digital Learning for a diversity and inclusion consultancy. A committed feminist since my undergraduate days, when I would pour over feminist texts for hours at a time in the university library, I was over the moon to work alongside the Fawcett Society as well as many other fantastic subject matter experts to create courses on Sexual Harassment, Antiracism, Mental Health, Unconscious Bias and Disability Inclusion and more.

While all of this was unfolding, I also became a mum, and this is a large part of my story too. Having a son made me reassess my feminism and stimulated my brain in a way I did not expect. I had lots of experience with empowering messages for girls, but how could I bring up a feminist boy?

From the moment we found out we were having a boy, the gendered expectations came flooding in from all sides - much to my surprise, even my own! I became obsessed with finding out why. I set about on my own mini project, a personal research masters if you will, to discover how different girls and boys really are - and that is what has led me to the work I’m doing now.

I’m motivated to share what I have learned with other educators, so that they have the tools to help young people of all genders to reach their full potential. To me, it’s vital to help both girls and boys see the limits that traditional gender norms are placing on them, and to move past those to a place of authenticity and joy, where they can truly be themselves. So whether you want to break down stereotypes in your school, or explore positive masculinities with the young people you work with, I’d be so excited to chat with you and help you on your journey.
